James' Next Surgery

It is so hard to believe that this coming Saturday will be two months since James' spring surgery to correct his sagittal craniosynostosis! This means that we are half way to having the springs removed and finally having all of this behind us. Previously we thought that the springs would come out around mid-May, but the manufacturer informed our doctors that waiting four months is best to make sure the suture does not close too early again.

Other than awaiting his next surgery at the end of June, James is doing GREAT! He now weighs 11 pounds, two ounces, a little over four times his birth weight of two pounds, 12 ounces. He is super tall like his daddy and full of fun and energy like his big brothers. We are still able to see the springs on the top and back of his head, but it is easily covered up by cute little hats. His head and face have a much rounder shape as opposed to the elongated form before the surgery. When we brought him home from the NICU in January he was constantly snorting and snoring through his nose. Immediately following the surgery that disappeared completely.
Before and After

The springs have almost met their maximum spread of 60 mm, and we continue to see changes in his head and face each week. The doctors are thrilled with his progress. We were interviewed a few weeks ago for an article in a neuroscience magazine. I'll be sure to post in when it is available.

Thank you all for your prayers and continued interest in James' Progress. You all mean so much to us, and I know one day he will be grateful for your love and prayers as well.

James' Progress

We received a great report from James' plastic surgeon today! The springs have each separated to 40 mm apart. Last week the back was 40 mm after starting out at only 10 mm. The springs in the front measured 35 mm, and I cannot for the life of me remember where they were post surgery! (Whoops!) The maximum distance the springs will separate is 60 mm so we are already half way there! (Woooooah! Livin' on a prayer!)

The greatest news we received was that James' head is now what is considered "normal" shaped. Unless anything drastic happens, the springs will still be removed in May, and we will finally have all this craniosynostosis stuff behind us. We were also told that the doctors at MCG are already preparing to do their second spring surgery and that they have already learned so much from James' experience.

Super James!!
